Mike & The Mechanics is a British rock band formed in 1985 by musician Mike Rutherford, who was also a member of the renowned progressive rock band Genesis. The original lineup included Mike Rutherford (vocals and guitar), Paul Carrack (vocals and keyboards), and Paul Young (vocals). History

Mike & The Mechanics was initially formed as a side project by Mike Rutherford while he was still a member of Genesis. The band debuted in 1985 with the self-titled album, which included the successful single “Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground).” The album received positive reception and established the band as a force in the music scene.

In 1988, they released their second album, “The Living Years,” which contained the titular song that became a major hit. The song explored emotional and personal themes about the father-son relationship and was highly praised for both its music and lyrics.
